Preparing for your DOT physical can help you avoid delays and feel more assured on exam day. Follow this checklist so you know what to bring, what to expect, and how to get ready for the exam itself.

If you drive a commercial vehicle, passing your Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is an essential part of maintaining your eligibility to drive. This exam makes sure you're physically and mentally fit to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

While you can’t control every part of the exam, a little preparation can help you avoid common setbacks and make the process easier.

At Pro-Health Urgent Care of Midland, we offer DOT physicals to help commercial drivers meet this requirement. Use the following checklist to prepare for your appointment.

Know what to expect

A DOT physical exam is more focused than an annual checkup. Our medical examiner evaluates your health for conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely and respond to potential hazards on the road.

The specifics of your exam may depend on the examiner, but may include:

  • Reviewing your health history
  • Measuring your weight, height, heart rate, and blood pressure
  • Testing your vision and hearing
  • Listening to your heart and lungs
  • Checking your reflexes and mobility
  • Collecting urine to screen for medical conditions

Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and prepare any information we might need.

Bring the right documents

Missing paperwork or incomplete documentation can delay your certification. Before your appointment, gather the documents needed to assess your health and verify that any medical conditions you have are well managed.

Some of the items you need include:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • Contact information for your medical doctors
  • A list of medications and dosages
  • Details of medical conditions and surgeries
  • Relevant medical records
  • Specialist reports or clearance documents
  • Recent labwork
  • A CPAP compliance report if you have sleep apnea

You can also review the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration report form before your visit. Call our team at Pro-Health Urgent Care of Midland at least a few days before your appointment if you’re not sure what documents you need to bring.

Wear your glasses or hearing aids

Vision and hearing are essential for recognizing hazards, following traffic signals, and responding to other drivers. DOT physicals include specific vision and hearing standards that commercial drivers must meet.

If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, bring them to your appointment. Bring your hearing aids, too, if you use them. If you have concerns about your vision or hearing, consider getting them evaluated before your DOT physical so you have time to address any issues.

Properly prepare

While knowing what to expect and having all the right documents and tools are key to passing the DOT exam, you also want to make sure your head and body are in the right place. Prepare for your exam by getting a good night's rest, skipping coffee and energy drinks, and taking your medications as prescribed.

You should also drink plenty of water so you’re prepared to provide a urine sample for testing.

Taking steps ahead of time can make your DOT physical more straightforward and put you in a position to pass on the first try, but certification depends on meeting the medical standards. If you don’t receive your certification at your first appointment, ask the examiner what additional steps you need to take.
